Games in Apr. 2025: Better late…

Asura’s Wrath (PS3)I remember when this game first came out, everyone just ragged on it for having QTEs instead of actual gameplay. This was the peak of the “QTE era” of gaming, when everyone started to be concerned with “cinematic presentation” and “set pieces” instead of good gameplay, and Asura’s Wrath seemed to be another symptom… It turns out though that it’s an example of how anything can be good if it’s done right. It’s true Asura’s Wrath is mostly QTE sequences sandwiched in between some slightly balls brawler gameplay, but what it does with those QTE sequences is so...

Games in Mar. 2025: Butterfly dreaming

Megami Ibunroku Persona (PS)The Persona series is a unique one as it’s sort of the first Japanese RPG to break containment in the West since game journalists in 2011 collectively decided that Japanese games are bad and gay, actually, and Uncharted is the peak of video entertainment. Thankfully, we’re past that era, but while developers like From Software have kept Japanese games on the map, the humble Japanese role playing game remains a niche pursuit in English-speaking circles, compared to Japan where the RPG is still the “default” kind of game. Persona, though, has had wild success in the West,...

Games in Feb. 2025: Down the well

Animal Well (PS5): Even after having played it I have to say the first thing I think of when I think of Animal Well is Dunkey, which is just as well I supposed given that he is the only reason I played the game in the first place. The first big game from Video Game Donkey’s Bigmode publishing operation landed on PS Plus on day one, and since the man couldn’t stop memeing about it (on top of it getting rave reviews elsewhere) I decided to pick it up. This game would be my first encounter with the so-called “Metroidbrainia”...

Games in Jan. 2025: Geared up and souled out

Last year, I published a big list with bite-sized reviews of every game I completed in 2024. I intended to do the same this year, but as the list grew ever-longer, I realized that I was setting myself up for a novella-sized post at the end of the year, so I decided to break it up into monthly bits and start publishing them now. Once I catch up, this will also let me review each set of games with them fresher in my mind, as well. I’ve played so many dang games this year I’m not sure I remember how...

The Other Games of 2024

This was my first full year back playing games in a big way. Games have always been something I go in and out of. After taking a break of several years from serious gaming, during which I bought a Switch and played a grand total of two games on it, something flipped a switch (pun not intended) for me in September of 2023, and for the first time since I was in elementary school, video games became my main hobby again. I had something like a gamer’s mid-life crisis, where I realized that if I didn’t start playing through them...

About the Dream

I’m trying to play every video game. The idea came to me when I was flipping through some old issues of Electronic Gaming Monthly, God rest its soul. Growing up, I loved video games, which makes me really unique, I know. There were a lot of other things I loved—Pokemon, football, airplanes—but video games fascinated me most of all. Part of the reason was their sheer unavailability. I was luckier than most kids in that my parents (atheists the both of them) saw no problem with video games, so I could play as much as I liked, but financially we...
